What do you think about such a tendency?Morley Robertson (MR): My ? reservations about, ? um, / standardizingEnglish education in the workplace is that, um, / trying to achieve higherscores with something like TOEFL or TOEIC, um, / leads to this illusoryor- ? or-or, say…/ yeah, I would call it illusory: a false impression that-thatthat,English usage is improving in your Japanese company. / Uh, I wouldfocus more on, uh, / developing conversational skills on the ground. /Trying to make something standard, uh…, / may involve some kind ofrisk, / uh, maybe for worker morale. Uh, / one side effect of sort of forcingEnglish, ? you know, as a -as a- / as a global standard onto-onto everybodyis that / some people might just drop off and find, uh, / find it easier towork at a competing company. / And that way you end up giving away /some of your best personnel who are not skilled at English ? / so you’regivin, you’re giving them freely to your competitors.
